Itinerary
Your trip begins early in the morning with a departure from Delhi. Depending on your chosen mode of transport—be it a private cab or a semi-sleeper Volvo bus—you will leave Delhi by 6 or 7 AM to make the most of your day. As you leave behind the bustling streets of the capital, the landscape begins to change gradually. The plains give way to gentle hills and forested slopes as you move closer to the foothills of Himachal Pradesh.
The drive is a scenic one, passing through key towns such as Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, and finally Chandigarh. There are several opportunities along the way to stop for breakfast and refreshments at hygienic roadside dhabas or restaurants. The road trip offers glimpses of rural India, with mustard fields, quaint villages, and traditional Punjabi and Himachali houses dotting the landscape.
By mid to late afternoon, you arrive in Shimla. On reaching the hill station, check in to your pre-booked hotel. The staff will welcome you with a traditional drink or tea, and after completing check-in formalities, you can take some time to rest and freshen up. Shimla’s crisp air and cool weather offer instant relaxation after the long drive.
As evening approaches, you can head out for a gentle stroll along the iconic Mall Road. This pedestrian-only stretch is Shimla’s cultural and commercial heart. You’ll find colonial-era buildings, cafes, restaurants, and shops selling woollens, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is lively yet serene, with street lamps casting a warm glow over cobbled walkways. Enjoy the panoramic views from The Ridge, the open space above Mall Road that often hosts cultural events and offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills, especially at sunset.
After an evening well spent, return to your hotel for dinner. The in-house restaurant usually offers a blend of North Indian, Chinese, and local Himachali dishes. Post dinner, unwind in your cozy room and prepare for a full day of exploration tomorrow. Overnight stay at the hotel in Shimla.
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, your second day begins with a full day of sightseeing in and around Shimla. Your first destination is Kufri, a charming hill station situated around 16 kilometers from Shimla. Known for its picturesque landscapes and adventure opportunities, Kufri is especially popular during the winter months when the area is blanketed with snow. However, even during other seasons, the region is rich with natural beauty and panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges.
On the way to Kufri, you’ll pass through thick cedar forests and winding mountain roads. Upon arrival, you can explore the Himalayan Nature Park, which houses rare species of mountain fauna including Himalayan monals, snow leopards, and musk deer. You may also choose to enjoy a horse ride or hike to the top of Mahasu Peak, the highest point in Kufri. The views from here are spectacular, with layers of misty mountains fading into the horizon.
Adventurous travelers can visit the Fun World amusement park in Kufri, which offers go-karting, zip-lining, and snow activities during winter. Whether you choose a quiet walk or an adrenaline-filled afternoon, Kufri caters to all types of travelers.
By early afternoon, you’ll return to Shimla for lunch. After a brief rest, the next phase of the day’s itinerary takes you to the city’s prime attractions. Begin with Jakhoo Temple, one of Shimla’s most revered religious sites. Situated atop Jakhoo Hill, the temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and features a giant 108-foot statue of the deity. You can either trek uphill through a forested path or take the Jakhoo Ropeway, which offers a scenic cable car ride with sweeping views of the city.
Descending from Jakhoo Hill, visit the historic Christ Church, built in 1857. It stands as a timeless testament to Shimla’s colonial legacy, with its neo-Gothic architecture and stunning stained-glass windows. Next to the church is The Ridge, an open area popular for its panoramic views, public gatherings, and iconic landmarks. Nearby, explore Scandal Point—a site with an intriguing history from the British Raj and a romantic spot ideal for photography.
As the sun sets, return once again to Mall Road for evening leisure. Try out a cozy local café or treat yourself to piping hot jalebis, masala tea, or Himachali siddu (a steamed wheat preparation). By late evening, head back to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Today offers flexibility to either explore the outskirts of Shimla with a day trip to Naldehra and Tattapani or to relax and enjoy more of Shimla at your own pace.
If you choose the excursion option, begin your day after breakfast with a scenic drive to Naldehra, located approximately 22 kilometers away. This tranquil hamlet is known for its rolling green meadows and is home to one of India’s oldest golf courses. Designed under the patronage of Lord Curzon during the British era, the Naldehra Golf Course is surrounded by cedar trees and offers a calm, open space for walking and photography. Horse rides through the deodar woods are popular here and offer a unique way to enjoy the local landscape.
After spending time in Naldehra, continue your journey to Tattapani, which lies further down the road. Situated on the banks of the Sutlej River, Tattapani is renowned for its natural hot water springs. These sulfur-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties and make for a rejuvenating dip. Tattapani also offers the opportunity for river rafting, depending on the season and water levels. After exploring both destinations, head back to Shimla by evening.
Alternatively, if you prefer a laid-back day, you can stay back in Shimla and explore lesser-known yet beautiful parts of the city. Visit the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, formerly known as the Viceregal Lodge. This heritage building with its majestic Victorian architecture is surrounded by manicured lawns and offers insight into India’s colonial past. Another serene spot is Tara Devi Temple, located on a hilltop offering panoramic views and spiritual solace.
You may also spend your time indulging in local cuisine, café hopping, or enjoying spa treatments offered at premium hotels. The day is yours to enjoy at your own rhythm. As evening falls, make the most of your final night in Shimla with a relaxed dinner at the hotel, followed by an overnight stay.
On the final day of your trip, wake up early to enjoy the cool morning breeze and a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. After checking out and settling your bills, begin your journey back to Delhi. The drive will take approximately seven to eight hours depending on traffic conditions and halts. You can make short stops for tea or lunch along the way, and if time allows, a quick detour through Chandigarh can be arranged for some last-minute sightseeing or shopping.
As you descend from the mountains and re-enter the plains, take a moment to reflect on the beautiful moments, serene landscapes, and cultural highlights you experienced over the past few days. You’ll reach Delhi by late evening, marking the end of your memorable Shimla journey. Our driver will drop you at your desired location, whether it is your residence, hotel, railway station, or airport.
