Itinerary
As the sun begins to set over the bustling capital of India, your journey to the hills begins with an assembly at the designated Volvo departure point in Delhi, usually at Majnu Ka Tilla or RK Ashram Marg. The Volvo buses, equipped with semi-sleeper reclining seats, air conditioning, and cozy interiors, promise a comfortable overnight journey through the winding roads leading to the Himalayas. You board the bus, settle into your seat, and feel the anticipation build. The gentle hum of the engine, the slow movement through Delhi's twilight traffic, and the promise of the misty mountains set the mood for what lies ahead.
As the city lights dim in the rearview mirror and the night envelopes the highways, you pass through scenic regions like Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, and Ambala. A few stops are made along the way for refreshments and dinner. The chilly air begins to make its presence known as the bus ascends gradually. Wrapped in your shawl or blanket, you drift off into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of snow, pine forests, and warm cups of tea.
With the first rays of dawn breaking through the window, you awaken to find yourself winding through the valleys of Himachal Pradesh. The crisp morning air and the majestic views of the Beas River flowing alongside the road signal your arrival in the land of dreams – Manali. Around 8:00 AM, the bus finally halts at the Manali bus stand. You disembark, stretch your limbs, and breathe in the pure mountain air. Your tour representative greets you and arranges your transfer to the pre-booked hotel.
Upon arrival at the hotel, you check in and are served a warm welcome drink followed by breakfast. After a little time to freshen up and rest, the local sightseeing tour begins in the late morning or early afternoon.
Your first stop is the iconic Hadimba Devi Temple, a wooden marvel set amidst a cedar forest. Dedicated to Goddess Hadimba, the temple is revered not only for its spiritual significance but also for its unique architectural style. Surrounded by towering deodar trees, the peaceful aura of this site instantly calms the senses. Next, you visit the Manu Temple, believed to be the only temple in India dedicated to Sage Manu, the progenitor of mankind in Hindu mythology. The cobbled streets and rustic setting of the temple make it an intriguing visit.
Continuing your journey, you arrive at the Vashisht Kund – known for its natural hot springs that are believed to have healing properties. The surrounding village, with its quaint houses and smiling locals, adds a rustic charm to the experience. After soaking in the cultural heritage, you head towards the Tibetan Monastery. The colorful prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels, and peaceful chants offer a spiritual detour into Tibetan culture and Buddhist philosophy.
By the late afternoon, you stroll along the Mall Road of Manali – a bustling street lined with cafes, souvenir shops, bakeries, and small eateries. Here you can indulge in shopping for woolens, handicrafts, and local spices, or enjoy a steaming bowl of momos or thukpa at a local joint.
As the sun sets behind the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, you return to your hotel. Dinner is served, usually featuring local Himachali delicacies alongside popular Indian cuisine. You retire to your room for a good night’s rest, excited for the adventures awaiting you the next day.
The morning in Manali begins with a spectacular sunrise peeking through snow-capped peaks. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, you prepare for the day’s highlight – the excursion to Solang Valley and possibly Rohtang Pass.
The drive to Solang is an experience in itself. As you ascend through narrow mountain roads, surrounded by apple orchards and pine forests, the landscape gradually transforms into a winter wonderland. Upon reaching Solang Valley, you find yourself in an adventure paradise. Depending on the season, the valley is either blanketed in snow or adorned with green meadows. Activities like paragliding, snow tubing, skiing, and ATV rides are available for thrill-seekers, while others may simply choose to soak in the view and click photographs against the stunning backdrop.
For those lucky enough to get access to Rohtang Pass (open typically from May to October), the journey continues further up the mountains. Rohtang, located at an altitude of 13,050 feet, offers panoramic views of glaciers, snowfields, and majestic peaks. The air becomes thinner, and the cold bites harder, but the sheer beauty of this high-altitude pass makes every hardship worthwhile. At Rohtang, you can build snowmen, engage in snow fights, or just lie back and watch the clouds glide over the peaks.
By mid-afternoon, you begin your descent back to Manali. Tired yet content, you return to the hotel by early evening. After freshening up, you may choose to explore Mall Road again or simply unwind at the hotel. A delicious dinner awaits, and the day ends with laughter, warmth, and stories shared over cups of hot cocoa.
The final day of your Manali adventure begins with an early breakfast and hotel check-out. Your luggage is packed, and your heart is heavy with the thought of leaving this paradise behind. But the journey isn’t over just yet.
Today, you head towards the Kullu Valley – a picturesque region known for its meadows, temples, and the meandering Beas River. En route, you stop at a Kullu shawl factory to witness the art of weaving that has been passed down for generations. You also get a chance to buy authentic woolen items, pashmina shawls, and Himachali caps as souvenirs.
From there, you drive towards the sacred town of Manikaran. Famous for its hot springs and religious significance, Manikaran is an important pilgrimage site for both Sikhs and Hindus. You visit the Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib, where devotees believe the hot springs possess miraculous healing powers. A langar (community meal) is served, and the experience of sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with people from diverse backgrounds and sharing a simple meal is deeply humbling.
As the day progresses, you begin the return journey towards the Manali bus stand. You arrive by late evening to board the overnight Volvo back to Delhi. You bid farewell to the hills, holding onto the breathtaking views and soulful moments. The bus rolls out, and the serene darkness of the mountains slowly gives way to the twinkling lights of distant towns.
